Hello. I'm looking for the parents of my great, great grandparents, Fredrick (or
Fredrik) Johannessen and Johanne Marie Hansdatter. He was born about 1829 in the
Akershus area and I assume she was also born in that area in 1836. My great
grandmother was one of their daughters, Matilda Caspera Augusta Fredriksdatter
(how's that for a long name?)
Any helpful hints would be great. I believe Fredrik and Johanne were married
July 15, 1853 in Aker Gamle Menighet, Oslo, Akershus. But I just can't figure
out their parents. I wonder if it's a coincidence, but the only child that
Matilda had, my grandfather, had the name Henry Emanuel Haufmann (or Hauptmann).
He might very well have gotten Emanuel from Fred.

I know my paternal grandfather Anton Winger was born in Grans, Hadeland. His
parents were Ole Anderson Winger born on 9/22/1848 and Randi Stensrud on
3/19/1854. In 1880 they came to America, settled in the Louisburg/Appleton, MN
area and had 8 children. Can you help me find more?
Re(1): Winger/Stensrud IP: 209.81.107.215 Posted on December 8, 2003 at 05:36:33 AM by Anne Sladky There is information in the genealogical files about Ole and Randi and their families. The following is a bit of family information which may simply be a restatement of information you've already found. It is part of the information we have on the Kontaktforum Emigrant Database form 473: Kari Olsdtr. Dvergstenseiet, (Stensrud), born 16.2.1858; left Tingelstad on 23.11.1877 ("eiet" indicates she was a part of a renter's family on Dvergsten, subfarm Stensrud) Lars Olsen, (Lars Stensrud), Kari's brother, born 30.8.1846, left Tingelstad 16.4.1866 Randi Olsdtr., Kari'sister, born 19.3.1854, left Tingelstad 5.8.1880 Ole Andersen Røisumseiet, born 22.9.1848 left Tingelstad 20.4.1880 (renter on Røisum) Marie Olsdtr., born 13.8.1878, left Tingelstad 5.8.1880 Anton Olsen, born 18.5.1877, left Tingelstad 20.4.1880 Please consider becoming a member! |
Re(2): Winger/Stensrud IP: 152.163.252.39 Posted on December 23, 2003 at 03:12:54 AM by Dear Anne, Mange tak for all the information on my family. I have found out that the Winger name did not come from Norway, that my last name should have been Andersen! Now I need to find Randi and Ole's parents. I will join as soon as I can print the application and get it mailed. Is it not possible to join online? Thank you so much! Ruth Ann |
Re(3): Winger/Stensrud IP: 130.67.71.93 Posted on December 30, 2003 at 09:00:32 AM by Gunnar Thon Wonder how you have found that the Winger name has not come from Norway. I would rather guess that it has come from one of the several Vinger places in this area of Gran. Randi Olsdatter was born 19.03.1854 at Dvergsteneie. Her father was Ole Mikkelsen b abt. 1809 in Gran. Her mother was Maren Larsdatter b abt. 1810 in Gran. You will find the family in the 1865 census at the Digitalarchive at the place Stenserud (Dvergsteneie). Ole Andersen was born 22.09.1848 at Molstadeie, Gran. His father was Anders Olsen b abt. 1820 in Gran. His mother was Mari Andersdatter b abt. 1819 in Gran. You will find the family at the place Kulebakken (probably also Dvergsteneie), Gran, in the 1865 census. You should also find birth information about many children in these families in the Baptism records also at the Digitalarchive. of farms I cannot find on these maps. Can someone provide specific locations for
these farms on the Statens Kartverk maps?
Re(1): Gran Farms IP: 209.81.107.215 Posted on October 18, 2003 at 00:02:40 AM by Anne Sladky The Lag has a detailed map of hadeland that lists all the farm names. If you tell me the names of the farms you are looking for, perhaps I can email you pieces of that map to help you locate them. It might be that you are looking for subfarm names ("Kanten" as an example, is a subfarm of "Hole" and not a separate entity but some folks identify themselves only with the "Kanten farm".) It might take a little more digging to find subfarms, but that's certainly is doable. We also have a list of farms from the 1801 census on the website in the "resource" section that may be of help in sorting this out. Farms in the 1801 Census |

Re(2): Nygaard Family
- more info?? IP: 63.226.185.176 Posted on October 12, 2003 at 01:00:21 PM by Thank You for your reply. Ingebrit O. (Ole) Nygaard, born in 1841, left Gran in emigration records via the Digitalarkivet on May 3, 1889 on the SS Angelo, Wilson Line, Kristiania, with three of his daughters: Marthe,(Martha), age 18, born July 21, 1871 in Hadeland, Norway (my grandmother),Ingeborg,(Inga, age 17, born 1872 or 1873 in Gran?, and Elena (Lena),age 9, born in 1879. Destination listed as simply: New York. We know that Ingebrit's sons, Johan, age 19, born in 1868, and Ole, age 20, born in 1867, left Gran via Kristiania, on 4-14-1887 for Eden, South Dakota (Dakota Territory). Johan (John) and Ole stayed in the Eden, S.D. area as did their descendants. Inga lived in the Highmore, Hyde area of S.D., and Lena lived in the Sanborn County area of S.D., but Ingebrit O (papa Ole) and Martha ended up in West Central Wisconsin. What I am looking for are ANY records of their life in the Hadeland/Gran area of Norway. We believe the mother was Kristi or Kjersti but that is all we have about her. We know she died in Norway but have no further information. Thank you for any help you can give. By the way, if they didnt use the name Nygaard, what name would they have used, and why would the police emigration records have it as Nygaard? |

Re(1): Nygaard Family IP: 130.67.172.11 Posted on October 12, 2003 at 02:37:04 PM by Gunnar Thon Jackie, If I am right about this family, Ingebret used the surname Olsen, his wife the surname Johnsdatter and their children the surnames Ingebretsen and Ingebretsdatter. The following is what I have for now. 1865 census: Engebrit Olsen 25 years and wife Kjersti Johnsdtr 27 maarried without children as renters in the cotter's place Moen in Gran. Children born later (all in cotter's places owned by the Alm farms (Almseie) in Gran) Ole Ingebretsen b 05.10.1866 Nedre Almseiet Johan Ingebretsen b 29.02.1868 Nedre Alm Anton Ingebretsen b 02.01.1870 Øvre Alm Marthe Ingebretsdatter07.1871 Amseiet Ingeborg Ingebretsdatter b 190.07.1873 Almseiet Caroline Ingebretsdatter b 19.07.1873 Almseiet Elina Ingebretsdatter b 1876 (birth date not given) Almseiet bapt 13.02.1876 This family (except Elina who was not born then) is in 1875 living in Nedre Almseie (a cotters place owned by the Nedre Alm farm). This place is then called Nygård! There you have the American surname. Will see if I can find more. Regards Gunnar |

What am I doing incorrectly? What are your sources? Parish records? I would like to keep searching but dont know where to go next. Thank you very much for your help. |
Re(5): Nygaard Family IP: 217.77.32.122 Posted on October 15, 2003 at 06:18:09 AM by Gunnar Thon Hello Jackie. Since Engebret and Kjersti were married short before the 1865 census took place, and they had no children then, you will only find those two in that census. They lived as renters at a place named Moen. Different ways to write the same name can make it difficult to search. But you should find Engebret like this (exact): Engebrit Ols. (including the . in Ols). Also the birth (e.g. baptism) information is to be found at Digitalarkivet under button "Parish registers" and "Oppland". These may be more difficult to search. The 1875 census of Gran you will find at this address: http://www.slektshistorielaget.no/ The family was then living at a place called "Nygård". Information about marriage and death (funerals) you will not find at the internet. I have found them in the parish registers micro films. Will try to send you an e-mail later with links to some of the records as a help. Gunnar. |

daughter of Lars Anderson Rud and Randi Bjella/Hov. They settled in the Pelican
Rapids, MN area.
Re(1): Kraggerud IP: 148.122.153.187 Posted on September 24, 2003 at 12:46:57 PM by Gunnar Thon When asking this kind of questions, the chance to get help will increase very much if all available information about the people in question is given. This question, with not even a year given, makes it very difficult. Then, there looks to be something wrong in this question. Randi Larsdatter, daughter of Lars Andersen Rud and Randi Andersdatter Bjella/Hov was born in Jevnaker in 1817. But she did not emigrate. She married in Jevnaker 31 Oct 1854 to Halvor Christoffersen. You will find them at Digitalarkivet as farmers at Lien in Lunner (Jevnaker) with children/grandchildren both in 1865 and 1875. However, I think (but I may be wrong since you have not given any years in the inquiry) that you will find Amon and Randi Kraggerud in the 1880 census of Norwegian Grove tws, Ottertail Co, MN like this: Amund and Rangdy Kreggerud, 39 and 29 years, farmers. Children: Lars 8, Anna 5, Anders 3 and Peter 1. I wonder, could it be that this Randi Kraggerud you are looking for instead is the niece of Randi Larsdatter Rud: Randi Andersdatter b 1850 in Gran and daughter of Ingeborg Larsdatter Rud and Anders Iversen Helmeid, mentioned in an earlier inquiry? Her age would match this one in the 1880 ccensus. |

Kolbakken Iverson IP: 217.77.32.122 Posted on September 17, 2003 at 06:29:37 AM by Gunnar Thon Are you sure that Ingeborg was born in Gran? A combination of this inquiry and your "Rude family" posting makes me believe that Ingeborg was not born there, but in neighbour parish Jevnaker. She must be Ingeborg Larsdatter who was born 3 March 1811 at the Rud farm in Jevnaker. Her parents were Lars Andersen Rud b 1766 at Rud and Randi Andersdatter b 1780 at the Vien farm in Gran. They were married in Gran 30 Oct 1800. Ingeborg was married in Jevnaker 30 Oct 1847 to Anders Iversen b 22 Oct 1815 at one of the Helmeid/Helmey farms in Gran. (In some sources he is called Hole (= your name Halle?)). His parents were Iver Pedersen Helmeid and Anne Hansdatter. The oldest child of Anders and Ingeborg was Iver b 15 sept 1847 (before the parents married) at the Rud farm in Jevnaker. The second child Randi was born at Kløvstadeie (a cotter's place) in Gran. On 20 April 1852 Anders and Ingeborg were recorded in the parish register of Gran with their two children for emigration to America. Ingeborg had 12 siblings at the Rud farm. Several of them died young, and two emigrated. One granddauther of Ingeborg's sister Mari (who emigrated) married one of my mother's first cousins in Minnesota. I am therefore interested in exchanging some info. Hope that this is "your" family. If so, I will have more information for you. Gunnar |

Hi,
I am looking for information on Karl Hallen born July 13, 1857 in Hadeland, son
of Paul Hallen and Martha Amundrud both born in Hadeland.
He married Christina Olson and with her and their young son came to America in
1881.
It is likely Karl had two brothers Paul and Gustaf who also came to America in
the 1880s.
If you have any information on Hallens in Hadeland I would appreciate it if you
would contact me.
Thanks
Valerie
Re(1): Hallen in
Hadeland IP: 130.67.211.178 Posted on July 30, 2003 at 09:45:57 AM by Gunnar Thon This Hallen name must have been a name that Karl took after emigrating. Possibly a "rewriting" of Hadeland (some similarity in pronounciation). Karl was born 13 July 1857 at Haakenstadeie in Lunner (then part of Jevnaker) and baptised 26. July (name written Carl). His parents were Paul Hansen and Marthe/Martha Amundsdatter. Her name written Amundsd in the church book. May look like Amundrud, but is not. You will find this family at Digitalarkivet in the 1865 and 1875 census in Jevnaker. They were living at the place Sjurstuen (= Haakenstadeie) in these censuses. But Karl is not there in 1875. The censuses shows at least 10 children in this family, with these names, sorted by their age: Gudbjør, Amund, Hans, Karl, Paul, Gustav, Kari, Otto, Matias and Ingel. In 1877 Karl got a certificate for moving to Kristiania, but it seems like he had moved already in 1874, and you will find him there in the 1875 census, living in Brogade. His name there is Carl Poulsen and he was a "skrædderdreng" (tailor under education). I hope that you are aware of the Hadeland emigrant project taken care of by the Hadeland Lag and Kontaktforum. You can read about it on this site behind the button "Kontaktforum". Hope that you send your emigrant information to them. Gunnar, gthon@online.no |

I have photos of his parents and now finally have names to go with them. Karl appears to be the first to come to America in 1881 and may have been the one to choose the name Hallen. His brother Gustav also went by Hallen and my great grandfather Paul took Hallen as his middle name, but kept Paulson as his last name. He must have felt a strong connection to Hallen though as his middle initial appears on everything, even his tombstone. Thank you for the help. Valerie |

Pederson of Vaaja

Posted on June 23, 2003 at 03:07:00 PM by
My g-g-g-grandfather Peder Pederson Vaaja (b. 1826) emigrated to the USA
(initially Wisconsin)in 1854. For a while he went by Vaaja, then Pederson, then
ultimately by various spellings of Voyen. I have done some research, and have
traced back a couple generations further. Anyway, on the Voien thread, the point
was raised that Voien/Voyen/Woyen are not at all related places to Vaaja/Voia/Woja.
So, although I initially thought that they were at least related places
(possibly Vaaja being a related farm to Voien) that seems not to be the case.
Anyway, anybody who can possibly shed some light on any possible connection
between either the places or even the words would be very welcome to do so.
Thanks!
Re(1): Peder Pederson
of Vaaja IP: 65.101.96.93 Posted on November 17, 2003 at 03:05:47 PM by Okay--a little more accurate info: Peder Pedersen, b. 1824 at Vaaja. Son of Peder Engebretsen and Marthe Hansdatter. Prior to 1822, they lived at Kobberbakken, where the child Hans was born. In 1820, they lived at Moldenejet, when the son Engebret was born. Engebrecht wound up working the Vaaja farm. In 1867, his daughter Randi Engebretsdatter emigrated to an unknown destination in the USA. In 1868, his son Peder Engebretsen (b. 1848) also moved to the USA. In 1877, Engebret Pedersen himself moved to the USA. We have no idea what happened to the others who moved to the USA. Peder Pedersen (my g-g-g-grandather) had initially settled in Argyle, Wisconsin and moved to Spring Grove, Minnesota in 1863. We have no record of any contact between him and his nephew, niece, or brother. If anybody else is out there looking at that line or related, please feel free to contact me with any information or questions you may have. Thanks. |
Re(2): Peder Pederson
of Vaaja IP: 213.234.72.29 Posted on January 8, 2004 at 04:10:44 PM by Knut-Iver Molden Lodsby Dear sir I don't have any information about your Peder Pedersen, but I can tell you a little bit about Vøien (Voyen) and Vaajaa. I own a farm in Gran called Molden, there are 5 farms. Moldenejet that you mention was a cotter place belonging to one of the Molden farms. Persons who did not own a farm of their own worked at farms or lived at cotter farms. Those you lived at cotter farms often moved from place to place, and that makes them hard to track in the church files. There are also several Vøien-farms, I can see one of them from my living room windows. Vaajaa is far up in the forest, about 8 miles from here. It's interesting to know that one of your ancestors broke the land for that farm, he must have chopped down a lot of threes to make that farm out in the forest, close to a lake with the same name. I talked to a lady that had lived at the farm in the 30-ies and 40-ies, she is the mother of a girl I went to school with. I'm not sure if this lady is a relative of yours. From my own farm, three men and two women emmigrated in the 1860-ies and 70-ies, we have lost track of 4 of the five families. The three boys all kept their Molden surname, the girls married Kjos and Skari. Hope this e-mail is interesting to you |

of Vaaja IP: 65.101.96.93 Posted on January 12, 2004 at 05:15:07 PM by Very interesting indeed. I don't know that I'm related to the woman who lived at that farm. I think most of my relatives from that side came over a long time ago. It wouldn't really surprise me, though, if we were somehow related. |

Posted on June 21, 2003 at 08:54:25 PM by
Hello, it's Anne Godfrey again. I have a mystery in the family on my father's
father's side. From responses that Ole Gamme got for me, I believe Henry Emanuel
Haufmann's (my grandfather) father's name may be Sofus Haufmann, but the
Norwegian Navy has sent us information saying that Henry's name was Henry
Emanuel Haufmann Skau. Could Henry have been adopted by the Skaus? Listed in the
1900 (I think it was 1900)census information the Navy sent us was J. Skau, his
wife Matilda Skau and a daughter named Emilie (she was around 16 years older
than Henry) and son Henry. My uncle told me once that Henry's mother's name was,
he believed, Emilie; could Matilda and J. Skau have adopted Emilie and Sofus's
illigitmate son (half of the family seems to think Henry may have been
illigimate; the other half denies this suggestion). Henry's birth date was March
31, 1890 in Kristiania. Any lines of research anyone could suggest would be
greatly appreciated; this mystery has driven us nuts all these years; either the
old people knew the "secret" and didn't want to tell, or no one actually knew
anything. One thing my father told me; there was a family that was "somehow"
connected with the Haufmann family; their names were Wilhelm (or Vilhelm) and
Albert Halvorsen (Willie was a warden at a prison in Oslo (I remember meeting
both in 1958 on a visit to Norway, especially Uncle Willie because it was in the
prison itself). Dad said they always called them "Uncle" but never knew if they
were really relatives or not. By the way, Henry was always known as Haufmann,
the Skau name came as a big shock.
Again, any suggestions or help would be gratefully accepted. Anne Godfrey

My grandfather, Christian Haug and my grandmother Oline came to the USA in the

children from Berndt and Petra Haug. They are listed as: John, Christian (my gf),

My grandmother Oline was the daughter of Andreas Pedersen Voldbakken. She was a

Family IP: 198.81.26.113 Posted on July 3, 2003 at 10:43:26 AM by Thank you for your help. I will go to Digitalarkivet and search further. We had the same problem with names in the United States when families immigrated. I believe those taking down the names spelled them phonetically. I suppose that accounts for name variations here too. Thank you, Andi |

Family IP: 130.67.68.216 Posted on June 22, 2003 at 08:04:55 AM by Gunnar Thon It is true that there was great variation in the ways to write the farm names. But a comment should be made to the last posting, because the different farm names mentioned there, "Woyen, Woien, Wojen, Woia, Woja, Voja, Voia, Vaaja, Vaaia", refers to different farms. So this could lead to incorrect conclusions. Woyen, Woien, Wojen. This name is today written Vøien. There are (at least) three farms with this name, all situated close together and right south of the Gran "town". Woia, Woja, Voja, Voia, Vaaja, Vaaia. I think that all these names refers to the farm today called Våja which is a quite different farm. It is located in a large fores area abt. 6 kilometers east of gGran "town". In 1865 it was a "husmannsplass" (tenant farm/cotter's place), today it is a separate farm. It is very small with only abt. one acre of cultivated land and a little bit of forest. There is as far as I know, no connection between the Våja and Vøien farms (despite the fact that emigrants from Våja took the name Voien in America). |

Family IP: 65.101.96.91 Posted on June 23, 2003 at 09:34:36 AM by Interesting. I always assumed that there must be some sort of connection, if nothing else between the words--although one has a masculine and the other a feminine gender (or so it seems). I know that Voien/Voyen has something to do with a place to ford a river--somewhat related to modern "vadestad". I never have been able to find anything related to "Vaaja" aside from a couple fishing-related things. It has always seemed strange that my ancestors decided to keep changing the spelling of their name, and then ultimately decided on "Woyen", which in English is by far the toughest for anybody to try to pronounce. |

I am searching for information about Martine Peterson-Egge born in Denmark
Approximately 1869. She was married to my great-grandfather Severin J Egge in
Illinois in 1890. I have done a lot of research and found she died in San Diego
California in 1946.

This must be Ole Andersen and Ragnhild Henriksdtr who were married in Jevnaker 6
April 1848. They emigrated in 1853 (certificate 19April 1853) with two sons
Anders (Andrew) b. 18Dec1839 and Henrik (Henry) b. 27 Oct 1852. Ole was born at
Kalvsjøhagen, a "husmannsplass" (cotter's place) owned by the Kalvsjø farm. The
Hogan name must be from his brith plce, the "Hagen" part of the name
Kalvsjøhagen. Will send you more information later today and hope that
information about this emigrant family will be available for Kontaktforum
emigrant project about which you can read at this Hadelandslaget site.

I am looking for information on who Severin J. Egge was married to...I am not
sure of name except a reference to a Martine Peterson from Chicago Illinois who
married Severin in 1890. Severin was general store operator in Towner ND, 1893.
Three children he had named Ingul, Signe, and Alfred. I have exhausted my
findings especially on who Severin was married to and if Severin had another
marriage. I am his great grand-daughter. My Dad did research but didn't get far
either. My dad died two years ago. It would mean so much to me if someone out
there has any information or if any relatives of Severin are around today.
