2008 Stevne
"Land..Logging...Legends"
July 16-19 Ramada Inn
Stevens Point Wisconsin
The 2008 stevne was held at the Ramada Inn in Stevens Point Wisconsin from Wednesday, July 16 through Saturday, July 19th. On Wednesday, a tour of Portage County included stops at an 1855 dam and sawmill, a century farm, and South New Hope Lutheran Church before heading to Nelsonville Lutheran Church for a meatball supper. Thursday morning, the opening session featured Sterling Strathe in an audience pleasing discussion of life in a Wisconsin lumber camp, as "Lumberjack Louie" and a chance to laugh out loud with "Aslak and Engebret" (David Fischer and David Olson). Then tour participants headed out for a day visiting the Hutchinson House Museum, Log Cabin Museum, and Iola Railroad Museum. The Genealogy room was open Thursday and Friday, and a schedule of excellent presentations and classes were also available. Among the presenters was Lag member Verlyn Anderson, who offered a session about the 1880's rift in the Lutheran Church. Friday evening's banquet featured a bunad parade led by a hardanger fiddler, a great meal, and dancing and music provided by the Landingsleiken, a group of young dancers from Sondre Land in Norway, and three members of the Twin Cities Hardingfelalag who entertained us with wonderful Hardanger fiddle music. Saturday's annual meeting was followed by a picnic in the park with Landingslag. |
